	(c)  In addition to the exit examination required under (a) of               
this section, a local school board shall require that pupils be                
measured against state performance standards in the areas of                   
reading, writing, and mathematics at the grade levels determined               
by the State Board of Education.  The department shall provide                 
sample examinations which would measure a students progress                    
toward the competence tested in the examination required under                 
(a) of this section.  A district will use these or other measures              
determined by the department to be comparable, and shall be                    
responsible for scoring and reporting results.  Each district shall            
report its results in its annual Report Card to the public and submit          
results annually to the department.                                            
	(d)  A pupil who fails to demonstrate proficiency on district                
measures required under this subsection shall receive remedial                 
instruction in the areas tested.  A district shall develop intervention        
plans to assist students who require remedial instruction.

	Insert "A pupil who passes the examination required under this                
subsection shall receive an endorsement on the pupil's graduation              
certificate that indicates that the pupil has passed the competency            
examination."
